The 2nd game of the season brought a local derby to Moore Lane Park with The Navy Club hosting the Sports Club in what was an eagerly anticipated game with the early season bragging rights up for grabs. It was the home side who took the early lead on 6 minutes with a free kick 20 yards out – that worked its way through the wall and past Shaun O Hara to make it 1-0. With the midfield battle taking up the majority of the next 15 minutes with each team vying to take advantage it took a wonder goal from Reece Gowlin who cut in from the left hand side to smash home a sweet goal to make it 2-0 to the hosts. The Sports Club quickly made a change on the half hour mark swapping the ineffective Anth Campbell for last season’s top goal scorer Chris Jones who made an immediate impact smashing home from the underside of the bar to make 2-1. With half time quickly approaching, the Sports Club took advantage of the pressure and David Teder took control of cross field pass before calmly lobbing the Navy Club Keeper to make it 2-2 going into the break. The second half started with a lot more composure as both sides looked for a way to gain the lead and take the advantage. Ryan Stonehouse, returning from a spell away, bossed the midfield for the Sports Club, with Reece Gowin doing the same for the Navy Club, with both teams cancelling each other out. The away side continued to force the pressure and as Sports Club Captain Mark Craggs looked to drill a pass into the home side’s penalty area, his somewhat wayward pass curled around the keeper to make it 2-3 on 70 minutes. The Sports Club had to hold on and absorb a lot of pressure but on the 80 minute mark, a throw in found its way to the edge of the box and a great shot was drilled home, bouncing just in front of the keeper to make it 3-3. The Navy Club were on the up and a succession of corners applied the late pressure but the Sports Club defended well. The Sports Club had a couple of good chances in the last 5 minutes, applying their own pressure in the final third but the game ran out to 3-3 draw, which on reflection was probably a fair result for both teams. Next week sees both sides playing against teams from Willington, The Sports Club host Willington Queens at Moore Lane and The Navy Club head over to Willington to play The Cottles. Scorers: C Jones, D Teder, M Craggs MOM: Kyle Allen
