Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks Flooring had a thumping victory by 171 runs away at bottom club Marton 2nds in the NYSD 2nd division on bank holiday Monday. Opting to bat first, Aycliffe piled up the runs thanks to Sam Telford’s brilliant 93 off 117 balls, Mark Woodhead’s 58 not out off 61 balls and a solid 41 from 78 balls from opener Graham Telford finishing their innings 241 for 4 after their 50 overs. Marton were bowled out for 70 after 44 overs thanks to excellent bowling from Patrick Howe (4 for 27), James Layfield-Carroll (3 for 12) and Michael Howe (2 for 2). On Saturday, Aycliffe’s first XI were denied a certain victory when rain forced the game to be abandoned with only 18 runs needed from 17 overs, with seven wickets in hand. After being asked to bat first, the home side were dismissed for 156 from 40.5 overs thanks to good bowling from the Howe brothers. Patrick took 3 for 21 and Michael 3 for 41. Mark Woodhead (sponsored by Michaela’s Nails) led the reply with an unbeaten 44 receiving good support from Sam Telford (41 runs) and Graham Telford (30 runs) as Aycliffe reached 139 for 3 from 41.1 overs, when the weather intervened. The 34 points gained from the two games played over the weekend ensured that Aycliffe first team will remain in the revamped NYSD 2nd division next season. The 2nd team were beaten at home to promotion hopefuls Rockliffe Park 1st XI by 78 runs in the NYSD 3rd Division. The visitors chose to bat first and scored 187 all out after 45 overs thanks to some good bowling from Lucas Pilling, Dylan Tribley, Stephen Sweeney and Elliott Holt, who all took two wickets each. In reply, Aycliffe got off to a flying start thanks to openers Elliott Holt (43 off 31 balls) and Stephen Sweeney (16 off 23 balls), but then suffered a batting collapse. They were eventually dismissed for 109 after 40 overs, despite some solid resistance from James Layfield-Carroll, who scored 15 runs from 52 balls. The second team play their final game of the season on Saturday 3rd September at home to Seaton Carew 2nd team. The u13’s team finished their season with a nine wicket defeat at home to Sedgefield in the NYACC league. Batting first Aycliffe scored a very respectable 87 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs thanks to excellent innings from both Kieran Shingler (31 retired from just 27 balls faced and with five boundaries) and Joe Bowsher (30 retired from 44 balls and with four boundaries). In reply the visitors coasted to victory and scored 88 for 1 to reach their winning target in the 13th over.
