Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring beat the weather and also beat Whitby 2nd XI at home in an exciting finish by just two wickets in the NYSD 2nd Division. The visitors were asked to bat first and were bowled out for 130 after 39 overs thanks to some excellent bowling from Jack Slatcher (sponsored by Mr & Mrs Greaves), who took a seasonal best 5 for 36, Colin Myers (2 for 25) and Mark Woodhead (2 for 30). In reply, Aycliffe got off to an excellent start thanks to aggressive innings from both Sam Telford (33 runs) and Michael Howe (18 runs). However the home side lost wickets at regular intervals and it was left to 9th wicket pair Chris Palmer (18 not out) and captain Luke Telford (9 not out), with an unbroken partnership of 21, to see Aycliffe home to a tense, but deserved win, with just two overs remaining. The 2nd team were well beaten away at top of the table Bedale 1st XI by 159 runs in the NYSD 3rd Division. The homeside chose to bat first and scored 227 for 0 declared after 31 overs. In reply, Aycliffe were skittled for just 68 after 26.2 overs despite good performances from Ben Nicholson (sponsored by Unison), who top scored with 26 runs, Elliott Holt (14 runs) and Stephen Sweeney (10 runs). The u11’s team finished their season with a 24 run defeat away at Sedgefield in the NYACC league. In the Aycliffe innings, there were good performances with the bat by Charlie cayless, who top scored with 10 and by both Matty Greaves and Daniel Heaton, who each scored 8 runs. When Aycliffe bowled, there was a career best performance from Joe Ingman who took 3 wickets for just 9 runs and he was supported well by Matty Greaves, who also bowled well taking 2 for 7. The u11’s finished their best ever season in the NYACC league with the record of played 17, won 7, lost 10. The club continue to run the successful “Quick Cricket” sessions every Wednesday during the schools six weeks holiday, and have the final session planned for Wednesday 31st August, from 10am to 12pm, cost £3 per person.
