Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, were well beaten by nine wickets away at Northallerton 1sts in the 2nd division of the NYSD.
Losing the toss and being asked to bat first on a wet wicket proved too much for Aycliffe as they were dismissed for 98 after 32.5 overs.
Opener Joe Haines top scored with a gritty 24 and a welcome 30 run 10th wicket partnership between Patrick Howe (15 not out) and James Layfield-Carroll (15 runs) also deserved credit. In reply, the home side eased to victory after 28.4 overs with Patrick Howe (sponsored by Mr Tom Steel) taking the only Northallerton wicket to fall.
The 2nd team game at home to Saltburn 2nds in the NYSD 4th division was cancelled as the outfield was waterlogged.
The club has just finished hosting the ECB’s All Stars initiative to give boys and girls in the 5 to 8 years age group their first experience of playing cricket. This involved an eight week programme at Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club with the emphasis firmly on learning how to play the game in a fun, safe and inclusive environment. Credit must go to Coach Adam Gittins, who facilitated the successful programme on behalf of the club. (see attached photo of some of the All Stars participants with their certificates and medals).
The club continue to run soft ball cricket sessions for the 6 to 11 age group, every Wednesday at the Sports Club from 10am to 12pm during school holidays. Boys and girls of all abilities are welcome and the cost is £3 per child per week. For further details please contact Secretary Lee Weldon on 07759 754959.
