Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks The Flooring Store, were well beaten by 63 runs at home to Yarm 1st XI in the 2nd division of the NYSD.
Asked to bat first, the visitors scored 187 all out after 48.3 overs with acting Aycliffe captain Luke Telford the pick of the bowlers finishing with an excellent 5 for 20 and Colin Myers chipping in with 2 for 31.
In reply Aycliffe were soon in trouble at 52 for 5, but a steady innings of 36 from Michael Howe and 23 from Colin Myers, briefly gave Aycliffe hope. However despite an unbeaten 21 from Tom Wickins, the home side were eventually bowled out for just 124 from 39.4 overs.
In mid-week the first team were desperately unlucky to lose away at Redcar by just one run in the semi-final of the NYSD 15/15 cup competition. The home side were asked to bat first and Aycliffe did well to restrict them to 112 for 8 in their 15 overs with John Cavanagh the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 21. In reply Aycliffe lost wickets at regular intervals and despite good innings from Luke Telford (34), Tom Young (16) and Ben Nicholson (12 not out), they just failed at the death when they lost their last wicket off the final ball of the innings.
The second team game away at Saltburn in the NYSD 3rd division was cancelled as Saltburn’s ground was waterlogged and deemed unfit for cricket.
The under 15’s lost by 22 runs away to Sacriston in the semi-final of the league cup. The home side were asked to bat first and raked up an imposing total of 125 for 6 from their 15 overs, with Dan Bowmer the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 2 for 15. In reply all-rounder Bowmer carried his bat for a superb unbeaten 51 and with good support from Ryan Patrick, who smashed a rapid 18, Aycliffe finished their innings on a respectable 103 for 8.
