Students due to start Greenfield Community College in September have been getting creative at this year’s Summer School, hosted by Greenfield Arts. The young people have had a fabulous time getting to learn new skills whilst having fun and getting the chance to meet new friends and teaching staff. The Year 7 students were exceptional and worked brilliantly alongside talented practitioners in a range of activities. Each group had the opportunity to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie, learning all about the process with filmmaker Laura Degnan, the young people made all their own props and costumes, played starring roles and got behind the scenes with lighting, sound and camera action. Every student got involved and 3 fabulous trailers were the result which will be screened in the new term. Author Andy Croft also lead a fabulous session creating stories which inspired the young people to create their own original fiction, the students will be able to see their work in print as it will be published and launched in the new term. A group of students were so taken with the activity that they also created and performed their own musical with original screenplay and lyrics, fantastic! The students even got the chance to make the latest installation for the foyer at Greenfield Arts, Paul Murray inspired the students to create a display of wonderful nests which represented home and family, a theme which extended to the new school community the young people are about to be part of. They had great fun working with textiles and ceramics with brilliant results which will be a great welcome for them for their first term. Mr Richardson and Mrs Stubbs, senior staff at Greenfield were thrilled with the success, “this has been a perfect opportunity for the children to form new friendships ready for their start in September, it has been an excellent week”. After all their hard work the students were treated to a fun day out at Beamish Wild with a bonus lunch stop at Pepes Ristorante. The trip was a thoroughly deserved reward for what was a great introduction to Greenfield Community College. Well done to a great group of students.
