Dear Sir,
In reference to last week’s Newton News article concerning Durham County Council’s proposal to remove the public right of way to use the footbridge at Whinlatter Place across Woodham Burn. We, Cllr Kate Hopper and Cllr Eddy Adam have raised our objections to the proposed removal of the public right of way to use this bridge and have requested that DCC fully consult with local residents to gauge their opinion.
Cllr Hopper and I have been campaigning to retain all bridges in the West Park area and were surprised to read the letter in the Newton News. However, it is our intention to continue this campaign provided we can get support from residents in and around the town especially those who regularly use this bridge. We believe this is a valuable asset, but without public support, demonstrating that the Whinlatter Bridge is an essential right of way and access point, then our campaign may fall on deaf ears. We therefore encourage all interested residents to write to us, and to DCC stating why you object to their proposal to withdraw the public right of way, which will ultimately lead to the permanent removal of the bridge.
Residents need to be aware when considering their objection as to whether the cost of approximately £25000 to £30000 to replace the bridge is value for money and efficient use of public funds? Also bearing in mind there are concerns for the other two bridges in the West Park area as they are also showing signs of deterioration and may need some remedial work.
Please use the reply slip below and send it to us by Friday 2nd October, 2015.
