A two-day course to help people learn vital countryside skills will take place in County Durham.
The course will teach beginners how to use a map and compass to avoid becoming lost and stranded when out walking.
It is being organised by Durham County Council’s Countryside Service and will be held over two days on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 between 10am and 3pm on both days.
The first day will cover how to read a map, understand the symbols, find and give a grid reference and how to use a compass. This session will be held at a location in Durham City.
The second day will give those taking part the chance to put their knowledge into practice out in the Durham Dales.
The cost of the course is £30 and bookings are being taken now.
People will need to bring a Silva-type compass and a North Pennines Outdoor Leisure Map number 31 with them.
Maria Murphy, countryside development officer at Durham County Council, said: “Satnav and GPS are great, but there’s no substitute for being able to read a map. It’s an essential skill for anyone who enjoys being outside, especially in remote places.”
