Helping People with Dementia

As part of Pioneering Care Partnership’s (PCP’s) commitment to health improvement, staff are being encouraged to make Twiddlemuffs to support Dementia Friends, Sedgefield. Twiddlemuffs are knitted or crocheted woollen muffs with items such as ribbons, pompoms, or textured fabrics attached that patients with dementia can twiddle in their hands whilst in hospital or at home. Some have pockets attached for a hanky or photo. People with dementia often have restless hands and like something to keep them occupied. The Twiddlemuffs provide a source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation at the same time as keeping hands snug and warm. The campaign aims to promote relaxation, reduce stress and improve mental health through the making of Twiddlemuffs. PCP would like to open up this campaign to the local community, if anyone is interested in making Twiddlemuffs or has any items they’d wish to donate please get in touch. The items needed are wool, all different textures, colours, thicknesses (chunky, mohair, fluffy or Aran wool is particularly good), bits of lace, ribbons, small zips and anything tactile that can attach. Carol Gaskarth, PCP Chief Executive says “Participation in health improving activities at work allows individuals to develop knowledge, selfmanagement and coping skills as well as build a social support network among co-workers, managers and family. It would be fantastic if the community could also come together and gather as much as they can so we can make as many as we can for this terrific cause. There is a box at the Pioneering Care Centre reception to leave items. Patterns are also available on request and on our website and social media pages.” People with dementia tend to have routines and become agitated in hospital as they are out of their usual routine, having a Twiddlemuff distracts them and helps to soothe their anxiety. So by donating a small amount you can make a massive difference to someone’s life.” For further information visit the Pioneering Care Centre, tel: 01325 321234, email: enquiries@pcp.uk.net or visit www.pcp.uk.net Or find PCP on Twitter: @PioneeringCare and Facebook: @PCPandCentre.
