Dear Syd

I would just like to congratulate The Newton News and everyone who contributed to last week’s edition, which carried many positive articles about different activities, past, present, and future.

It’s very encouraging to know that there are lots of people in the community taking great strides to meet the challenges of providing facilities, time and labour to improve all aspects of community life.

It was also nice to see the Town Council and the Town Management complimented a couple of times by Audrey Humble and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her personally for her generous observations.

I would also like to mention the exciting new projects and events going on in the Youth Centre spurred on by the highly commendable Youth Council members and there various committees. I would suggest that we all look carefully at what they are doing and get involved.

I have been out and about watching lots of children well-supervised, joining in, and enjoying many coaching events. I would also like to acknowledge all the hard work that has been done by the youth football managers and the support given by our Senior Northern League team officials culminating in the presentation awards so richly deserved and presented at the Big Club.

It was good to see the caring side of our community with the Helping Hands team and the Tesco team showing extreme generosity, giving their free time and endeavour in what can only be described as dire circumstances for the most vulnerable. Also, Contact a Family, another charity helping the disabled are showing the way forward for people to receive comfort and support.

Clearly, we still have problems and we are right to point them out but I just felt there was so much to appreciate and admire in this week’s edition, that all those concerned, not just those I’ve mentioned, should be applauded for their energy, application, inspiration and civic pride.

Clr Jim Atkinson
