Dear Sir,
We recently received a call on the land line (we are ex-directory and have yet to know how they got our number) telling us something was wrong with our Windows computer and this was a technician from Windows. (We own 3 but they would not specify which, saying all had problems).
They direct you to find the event viewer on your computer which is a legitimate part of Windows, logging minor errors your computer has encountered. They use these errors to scare you into thinking something is wrong with your computer. They kept saying that because of the errors we had been cut off the main server and were on a temporary Windows server. They then instructed me to type a web address into my ‘all programs search bar’ but instead I typed part into google and had confirmation this was a scam as many forums had issued warnings.
The scam is known as ‘Ammyy’ as this is the first part of the address they get you to type. I hung up the phone and they rang back and I informed him I knew it was a scam, as it was all over the internet.
He denied this and said it was real and threatened to cut our computers off the Windows server. I told him that my computer was fine and if I had any real problems I would take it back to the store from which it was purchased, I then promptly hung up the phone.
Online, people who have fallen for the scam have had computer viruses and been charged money and had their computer remotely accessed by those running the scam. I hope this helps to raise awareness of those who use computers.
