The infamous “Durham National Handicap Steeplechase Race” will return to Sedgefield Racecourse on Thursday, 2 November.

It has been part of Sedgefield’s heritage since 1955 and is the biggest race of the year with an total prize fund of £30,000 this year.

Sean Magee, horse racing journalist and author of ‘The Arkle’ sponsors the Durham National and names the race “The Racing App Sedgefielders Durham National” as he gathers his local and national friends together for the fifth consecutive year.

The Class 2 race now boasts the highest prize fund of the season and is complemented at this meeting with two class three races.  This year the race sees thirteen declared horses and amongst these include last year’s winner Buachaill Alainn. Can Peter Bowen take home the prize for a second consecutive year?

Other competitors to look for include Russian Regent trained by leading Irish trainer Gordon Elliott, Washed Ashore trained by Jonjo O’Neill following success at Market Rasen in April and 2015 Durham National winning trainer Dr Richard Newland returns but with Adacious Plan.

Jill Williamson, Executive Director at Sedgefield Racecourse said; “We are delighted to see last year’s winner Buachaill Alainn, declaring again this year as well as Dr Richard Newland declaring with Adacious Plan to possibly win his fourth National! The Durham National is the highlight of our racing calendar and the race is proving exciting with more entered runners this year which we hope encourages more viewers to attend this event.”
