Last week, Durham Constabulary’s Mini Police, including Year 6 pupils from Stephenson Way Academy, led a procession of over 1500 children from schools across the north east through Durham city centre and on to a special celebratory service at Durham Cathedral.

This exceptional event was held to celebrate the diversity of the many communities that belong to our schools, National and indeed the Commonwealth of Nations. Bystanders lining the route were treated to quite a spectacle as pupils paraded through the streets of Durham carrying flags to represent each of the 53 countries within the Commonwealth of Nations.

From Australia to Antigua, Canada to Cameroon, the diversity in the many religions, cultures and geographical locations stood harmoniously side by side in a show of togetherness to celebrate the unity of our wider communities.

Following a spine-tingling rendition of The National Anthem, the Queen’s Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Sue Snowdon, opened the special Service with a warm and welcoming speech.

A collection of readings, acknowledgements of friendship and songs sung beautifully by the children brought the congregation together in celebration.

All agreed that the memories of this wonderful experience will be fondly remembered by everyone for a long time to come.
