Storm Arwen nearly put a stop the Christmas Celebrations in Aycliffe Town Centre on Saturday 27th November. Most of the storm blew over on Friday night, but the forecast forced the organisers to move the stall holders to the ex-Bon Marche unit, giving them cover from the expected wind, rain and snow.
The outdoor activities, including kiddies fairground rides, snow globe, concession vans were cancelled due to the weather. However, Aycliffe Radio played Christmas tunes, Santa and Mrs Claus had over 400 local children visit them and the Shine Choir from St. Clare’s entertained those in attendance with Christmas Carols prior to the switching on of the tree lights. Prof. Nincompoop also made a surprise visit to do balloon magic for the children.
Our mystery guest, Sara Davies, who was unable to confirm until the last minute due to contractual obligations with Strictly Come Dancing, arrived to turn on the lights with our Deputy Mayor, Ken Robson. Sara Davies and Mr Robson both wished the audience a Merry Christmas and then mingled, talked to and took ‘selfies’ with the children.
The Town Centre Management would like to thank those who came along on the day, especially Shine Choir, the local Police Team, Santa and Mrs Claus, the stall holders who braved the weather and Aycliffe Radio.
