With the cold weather set to continue, people are being reminded to check on vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives.
Durham County Council’s Stay Healthy This Winter booklet is available online, offering tips and advice on keeping warm and well during the colder months.
The cold weather is felt the most by older people, the very young and those who already have health conditions.
It can lead to serious health problems, such as an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, lung problems and influenza.
Stay Healthy This Winter includes practical advice and information on ways to stay warm and well during the cold weather as well as contact details for services and organisations which may be able to offer support.
Nick Springham, Durham County Council consultant in public health, said: “As the weather turns colder, we’re urging everyone to think of someone who may be affected by the cold. It may be an elderly relative, friend or neighbour or someone who has young children or who is not in the best of health. We’re asking people to think about what they may be able to do to help that person look after their health this winter.”
