Celebration of Creative Achievement at Greenfield Greenfield Arts recently hosted a fantastic celebration event for the latest exhibition by the Greenfield Community College Young Interpreters, which was followed by the annual Arts Platform lead by students and staff of Greenfield Community College performing arts department. The night was a celebration of the talent and creativity amongst the students and is a great platform offering students the chance to show off their creative skills with pride. The Young Interpreters are a group of year 11 students who have come together to engage more young people in the arts, by developing a better understanding of what it is students would like from The Greenfield Gallery and the opportunities it offers, whilst also working towards a Bronze Arts Award. Through this process the students have had the chance to experience art, take part in workshops, work with professional artists as well as lead and inspire other young people in being creative. Based on the work developed through the Arts Award, the Young Interpreters have curated a variety of artworks from Greenfield Community College students to create the current exhibition, which is open from Monday 17th July – Wednesday 26th July.

The exhibition includes the work of GCSE textiles students as well as expressive collage and textiles work by year 7, 8 and 9 students, as they felt all students should have a platform to display their work and a voice to express their feelings about it. We were lucky enough to receive a visit from Councillor John Clare, who popped by to meet some of the young people involved in the exhibition. He was very impressed by the work and ideas that had gone into it, commenting that ‘All had enjoyed the experience, talked intelligently and meaningfully about the work, and it reminded me of the days when I used to be a teacher.’ Students spoke of the workshops they attended and how it made them feel free to voice their opinion whilst also offering them the space to be creative in their own way, particularly when going through tough times.

The Young Interpreters hope this exhibition, and all that has preceded it, will inspire other students to take up art GCSE and continue to get involved and develop the programme, once they have left. Come along, let your voice be heard and even take part in the activity!
