The colourful festival of Onam was celebrated in style last Sunday as more than 100 people, mostly originating from the South Indian state of Kerala but now living and working across our North East region, gathered at Bethany Centre, Woodham. Kerala is a beautiful tropical paradise in Southern India with lush palm fringed beaches. Each year the festival of Onam takes place where people give thanks for the abundant rice harvest.

This year the festival came to Newton Aycliffe with a special event filled with colour, music, dance, drama and a feast of around twenty different dishes of Keralan vegetarian cuisine. Local GP Dr. Winny Jose who, along with other members of Harvest Christian Centre, helped organise the event said, “It brought people from many different backgrounds together to unite, celebrate and experience a very special and unique evening of vibrant culture and food.” For more information on upcoming South Asian or other multicultural events contact Harvest Christian Centre on 01325 308284.
