Dear Sir,

The collapse of the Carillion company just shows how incredibly stupid Whitehall’s policy of privatising parts of the health service has been. If we end these PFI contracts and bring buildings and equipment back into public ownership there are vast savings to be made for the NHS budget.

Directors of companies like Carillion, have paid themselves fantastic amounts of public money awarded to their companies to carry out public sector contracts and build public works. As a direct result the Carrilion company has now collapsed unable to perform those contracts or pay pensions to their former workers.

One Carillion director alone received more than £1billion in the last two years according to a report on the Guardian Newspaper website. Whitehall top civil servants are responsible for allowing this to happen because they recently allowed changes to the contracts under which Carillion and others operate.

These are the same Top Civil Servants who want to shut our A and E in Darlington, because they say they cannot find an extra £271 million to keep running A and E on three sites in Teesside.

No one ever explains how they came up with that figure of £271 million anyway. There should be resignations in Whitehall amongst top Civil Servants today because of the failure of Carillion, but of course there wont be.
