Sedgefield Water Polo Club travelled to the Manchester Aquatic Centre to play in the National under 15’s Championships for boys against the best other 11 teams from around the country.
Sedgefield started off against Hertfordshire champions Watford who they drew with in last years Championships. Sedgefield scored some quality goals and led 6 -5 at half time and in the second half Sedgefield took control to win 10-6.
In their second game they were up against Welsh champions Cumbran and in a simlar pattern to the first game Sedgefield led by one at halftime 5-4 but once again they dominated the second half to win 10-6 .
In the quarter finals Sedgefield were up against Paignton and dominated from the start to win 10-3.
In the semifinal Sedgefield were up against one of the favourites London Invicta. The score was 2-2 at half time and Sedgefield were 6-4 up with 2 minutes to go when some very controversial decisions went gainst Sedgefield to allow the London team to win in the last few seconds 7-6.
The Sedgefield players were very disappointed but regrouped for the bronze medal playoff against Western Champions Cheltenham. Sedgefield gave a great performance to defeat Cheltenham 10-7 to finish 3rd against all the big city teams in Britain.
Kris Egginton 13 was player of the tournament for Sedgefield with a great all round performance in attack and defence.
John Pratt 14 scored 21 goals and was the tournament’s best attacking player.
Aron Mason 14 and Connor Keeble 13 gave a great performance in their defensive role. Richard Murray 13 making his debut at this level made some great saves at vital times. Jake Plant 14 was second top scorer for Sedgefield with 8 goals.
The other members of the Sedgefield team were Ben Stephenson 12, Michael Cousins 13, Niall Coulthard 10, Michael Hampshire 11, Hugh Masterson 13 and Mike Kelly 14.
