An obituary published in a newspaper ninety years ago, inspired Hilary Smith to write a work of historical fiction. The story begins in the Isle of Skye at the time of the ‘clearances’ and moves to the Howick Estate in Northumberland – home of the Earls Grey.
The research for this novel was done, for the most part, from her home in Woodham. Spare time for writing and research was abundant after her retirement from a career in Durham County Council and the loss of her husband, Christopher.
They moved to Newton Aycliffe 20 years ago. Hilary is a member of the Wear Valley Writing Group.
The launch of ‘All the Leaves of the Tree’ will take place at a feree event at Bishop Auckland Town Hall on 11th September at 7.30pm. The novel is available from County Durham libraries and on sale from Amazon.
