The next public meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will take place on Monday, 22nd November at 7.30pm in Bishop Auckland Town Hall when John Castling, The Auckland Project’s Archaeology Curator, will speak about recent excavations at Auckland Castle.
Auckland Castle is widely considered to be one of the most important mediaeval residential buildings in Northern England.
Recent years have seen several excavations by Durham University which have brought a great deal of new information to light that has enhanced the understanding of the site and its significance – not least the discovery of Bishop Bek’s early 14th century chapel.
This talk will highlight some of these remarkable discoveries and describe how they have transformed our understanding of the mediaeval Prince Bishop’s palace.
Free to members/£2 for non-members.
