Ian Varty who works for Compound Photonics at Aycliffe has published a book ‘From Denim to Khaki’ which started as a one off. He quickly found out it would lend itself to a Trilogy. It is fiction, but based on facts that he experienced, with others he served with. It details the life of a young man, joining the army straight from school at 16 and follows his career from the ‘Cold War’ of the 1980’s, up until the Afghanistan conflict.
Ian was born in Sedgfield, lived in Ferryhill, then left with his parents when his dad joined the Army. Ian joined the Army and served 23 years before leaving in 2003 and settling in West Auckland.
With the death of his father in 2010, Ian began to question why are we here? His dad had been a big influence on his life, and he wanted to recount the memories he held.
This led him into the world of publishing, to try and show some of the hardships that face the modern soldier.
