I would like to thank Aycliffe Village Local History Society, in particular Mr Harry Moses and Mr David Blair, for organising the remembrance service held on the Village Green – Friday 9th November. Members of the society, residents, pupils and staff from the primary school, saw approaching a hundred people attend the eleven o’clock event. Gathering around the ‘There but not there’ installation (Tommy), thirteen children laid crosses in memory of the thirteen brave souls who didn’t return from the Great War.

Although a solemn occasion, it was heart warming to see so many, of all ages, come together to remember. A glorious rendition of The Last Post ensured there were more than a few damp eyes as the ceremony came to a close.

Lest we forget

Cllr Billy Blenkinsopp
