The 2013 European Youth Olympic Festival took place in the Netherlands, 14th to 19th of July. Participants, between the ages of 13 and 18, competed in 9 summer sports disciplines; athletics, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, handball, judo, gymnastics, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Team GB took 44 athletes who competed in 5 of the 9 sporting disciplines.

Just like the Olympics, the young boys and girls lived in a Village. There was an opening and closing ceremony an Olympic Flame and Flag.

Sedgefield 75’s Hannah Featherstone represented Great Britain, and was the only swimmer selected from the North East competing in three events. The 100 metre Freestyle Team, Medley Team and the Mixed Freestyle Team, and came away with a fantastic tally of 2 Silver and a Bronze.

Hannah’s split time of 57.66 seconds in the Mixed Freestyle Team was the 3rd fastest individual time set during the championships, a truly outstanding performance considering Hannah did not compete in the individual Freestyle event where with this time would have gained her another medal.

Hannah will now compete at the National Championships in Sheffield lining up against her GB teammates and an enthralling encounter in the pool.
