Aycliffe Fell Walking Club enjoyed a really fine winter’s day in the East Yorkshire Wolds on Saturday 14th January. Whilst 3 members took on the 16.5 miles, and longest walk, from Fridaythorpe via the Yorkshire Wolds Way, we started from the B1248 just west of Towthorpe. The majority of the walkers stayed on the coach and did a very muddy circular from Malton. Walking westward to some scenic shallow dales, we quickly came to the site of the Medieval village of Wharram Percy where we were treated to a gory story from Ken of the village’s past where bodies were exhumed and dismembered thus ensuring that they didn’t come back! Leaving the village via a disused railway track we came to Wharram le Street and onto the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Despite the recent rainfall, the route remained dry underfoot throughout and we quickly found ourselves strolling through the delightful village of Settrington and onto the Centenary Way which took us to Norton On Derwent and across the river to the town of Malton. All walkers arrived back safely before the light faded and enjoyed the friendly hospitality of the local hostelries.
Next month on 11th February, AFWC returns to the Lakes for the first time since lockdown to tackle walks up the side of Skiddaw, Bassenthwaite and the Workington River Walk all ending up in Cockermouth.
It should be noted that AFWC outings involve enough choice so that, if you are new to walking, you can choose a shorter walk whilst braver and more experienced walkers may choose the longer and more demanding routes. There are walks for everyone’s needs at a cost (to cover the coach) of only £15 per person per outing. Annual club membership is only £10 per person. The coach picks up walkers in Darlington, Aycliffe Village, Newton Aycliffe, Middridge, Shildon, South Church and Bishop Auckland and frequently Barnard Castle plus the Premier Inn at Stockton, if on route.
If you are interested in joining us on one or more of our walks, visit our website www.aycliffefellwalkingclub.com and book a seat on the coach using the online form.
