Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team team sponsored by Franks Flooring Store were easily beaten at home to Redcar 2nd XI by 89 runs in the NYSD 2nd division. The visitors scored a decent 186 all out in 39.5 overs with spinnner John Cavanagh (sponsored by CVO Fire) the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 6 for 48.
Aycliffe struggled throughout their innings with only Michael Howe (36 runs) and all rounder Cavanagh (19 runs) having any real impact as the home side were bowled out for just 97 runs after 32,5 overs.
Aycliffe’s first team beat Darlington RA by just 3 runs in the quarter final of the Readman Cup. Aycliffe scored 148 for 8 in their 20 overs, thanks to Michael Howe’s excellent 36 and Tom Young scoring 30. Three wickets each from Michael Howe and Sean Morgan helped restrict the visitors in a tense finish to 145 for 7 in their 20 overs.
The second team lost, away at Bishop Auckland 2nd team by just 38 runs in their NYSD division 3 clash. The homeside were asked to bat first and were blown away by some superb fast bowling from Aycliffe’s Danny Weldon (see photo)who finished with career best figures of 6 for 16 from his 8.5 overs, the best performance by a second team bowler for 8 years. Acting captain Jack Slatcher bowled well taking 2 for 32 as the Bishops were dismissed for just 98 after 29.5 overs. Aycliffe were bowled out for just 60 after 26.2 overs with only Dan O’Connor reaching double figures scoring 21.
Aycliffe’s under 18’s lost for the first time this season going down by 7 wickets away at Tudhoe. Aycliffe were dismissed for 107, but there were good innings from Arran Taylor (23 runs), Tom Wickins (20 runs) and Ben Nicholson (18 runs). In reply Tudhoe easily reached their target despite all rounder Wickins taking 2 for 16.
The under 15’s team put in a brilliant performance and were desperately unlucky to lose by virtue of losing more wickets as the game had ended in a tie. Tudhoe batted first and scored 125 for 3 in their 20 overs, with 13 year old Nathan Parry again the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 2 for 11.
Opener Jack Lowery batted superbly to score a career best 50 not out and Arran Taylor also batted well scoring 32 as Aycliffe’s innings finished on a despairing 125 for 4 after 20 overs.
The u13’s team had a close defeat away at Darlington despite a vastly improved all round display. When Aycliffe fielded, Kieran Shingler and Matty Greaves both claimed run outs after brilliant direct hits at the stumps.
Leo Mercy bowled a wicket maiden and rooky wicket keeper Luke Grindlay had a good game behind the stumps taking a very smart catch. In Aycliffe’s innings, captain Nathan Parry smashed a quickfire 20, which included four boundaries.
Our u11’s team lost at home to Barnard Castle, but special mention for captain Leo Mercy who held a brilliant catch in the deep and then took two wickets, both clean bowled also to Ian Robson who batted well and hit two boundaries.
Aycliffe all rounder Lucas Pilling played his first game for Durham County u12’s, scoring 17 runs off 19 balls. He also bowled three overs and took one wicket for just seven runs as his side easily defeated Durham School to cap a memorable debut for the talented youngster.
