On Saturday 21st May, Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club fielded two senior teams in their respective NYSD league games and for the first time in the club’s history, all 22 players who represented the club have come through the club’s junior system, with many starting at u11’s level. The club and its many volunteers have worked tirelessly over the years to establish the youth set up and everyone who has helped during this period should be very proud of this unique achievement.
Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, finally won their first game of the season when they defeated bogey side Barnard Castle 2nd XI by 52 runs in their NYSD division two match. After losing the toss, Aycliffe were asked to bat first and they duly piled up the runs finishing their allotted 50 overs on 260 for 9. Adam Gittins top scored with his second half century of the season finishing on 62 from 113 balls, including ten boundaries. Other notable contributions came from Sam Telford (46 runs from 43 balls), Joe Teasdale (23 from 29 balls) and Owen Smith (23 from 22 balls). In reply, Luke Telford (3 for 39) and James Layfield-Carroll (3 for 76) worked so hard for the team, each bowling unbroken 15 over spells and they were supported well by Matty Greaves (2 for 17) and Leo Mercy (1 for 35) as Aycliffe bowled out their visitors for 208 with just 17 balls remaining. Our young second team came so close to winning their first game of the season and had to settle instead for a heartbreaking one wicket defeat away at Yarm 2nd XI in the NYSD 4th division. Aycliffe chose to bat first and scored their highest total of the season finishing their allotted 40 overs on 152 for 8. Captain Ryan Patrick (sponsored by A Star Bathrooms) was the game’s top scorer with a career best 95 from 113 balls and his fantastic innings included nine boundaries and two sixes. The only other batsmen to reach double figures for Aycliffe were 14 year old Dan Heaton (12 runs from 22 balls) and Patrick Howe (11 runs from 34 balls). In reply, Aycliffe took wickets at regular intervals thanks to combinations of good bowling from 13 year Will Dearden (3 for 40) and 14 year old Leo Stout (2 for 34) and some sharp fielding, but they were just unable to take that final wicket as the home side’s tenth wicket pair crawled over the winning line after 35.1 overs.
The u13’s had a comfortable seven wicket win at home to Darlington RA in the NYACC league. Aycliffe fielded first and got off to an amazing start when captain Will Dearden took a superb hat-trick in the first over of the game and finished with the remarkable figures of 3 for 0 from his single over. The visitors eventually finished their allotted 20 overs on 53 for 3. In reply, Aycliffe coasted to victory after only 10 overs thanks to good innings from Danny Wild (22 not out) and Tom Norman (11 not out).
The u11’s were well beaten at home to Barnard Castle by 108 runs in the NYACC. However, there were good individual performances by both Trent Telford, who top scored with 15 runs, and Joey Hayman, who scored 14 runs and then took the only wicket to fall when the visitor’s batted.
