Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, finished their season in style with a big win at home by 111 runs and confirmed relegation from the NYSD 2nd division for their opponents Bedale 1st XI. Aycliffe captain Adam Randall won the toss and chose to bat first and this proved an excellent decision as opener Luke Telford smashed 64 runs off 61 balls and his aggressive innings contained ten boundaries and a six. When Luke was dismissed, his cousin Sam Telford (sponsored by the Fairhurst Family) took over and he too hit the bowling to all parts of the ground to score his fifth century for Aycliffe. Sam was eventually dismissed for a superb 117 off just 86 balls faced and he hit 14 boundaries and three sixes. Jack Slatcher also batted well scoring 26 runs off 36 balls which helped push Aycliffe’s innings to 265 for 7 declared off 47 overs, which was their biggest score of the year. In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 154 off just 25.2 overs helped by some brilliant bowling by Aycliffe opening pair Michael Howe (5 for 52) and Jack Slatcher (3 for 59).
Aycliffe’s first team finished their season with the playing record that reads: Played 22, Won 5, Lost 9, Drew 4 and four games that were not played due to bad weather and Covid-19. The final points total was 238 and they finished in 7th place in the NYSD second division table.
