Newton Aycliffe couple, Ken and Elaine Robson, represented ACORN Residents, Association at Runnymede on 15th June for the national 800th celebration of the signing of Magna Carta.
ACORN Residents commemorated Magna Carta by staging a “Libertea” event. A Marquee was erected on a green adjacent to Marshall Road and the flags of St George, King Richard, The Sovereign and Durham County were flown to celebrate the event.
Despite heavy rain on the day ACORN volunteers backed up by our friends from Horndale, Wasps and Ladra enjoyed the occasion with a buffet, games and a toast of Mead.
Local children painted shields with designs representing their view of Magna Carta with some surprising results.
Music and face painting was provided by the talented Harry Potty; with buffet lunch from Jerk Pot catering.
Special thanks to Livin housing for their financial support and encouragement without which ACORN would struggle to put on these types of events.
Ken recalls “We were very proud to represent ACORN at such an historical occasion and grateful to Parliament UK. Surrey County Council and the National Trust for the opportunity to attend such an auspicious event.”
Present at the event were H.M. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, the Duke of Cambridge, the Princess Royal the Arch Bishop of Canterbury and Prime Minister David Cameron.
