Derek and Mary Mooring of Bamburgh Crescent celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at the weekly Luncheon Club held at St. Mary’s Church. The Mayor Barbara Clare was present with a bouquet for the couple as was Pam Biro (right) who presented flowers on behalf of the luncheon group.
Derek and Mary first met outside a theatre in Newcastle, Derek was from Gosforth and Mary from Heaton.
They got on very well and Derek asked to take her home. He remembers it well as he then had a five mile walk to get himself home.
A year or so later the couple became engaged and it soon came round to thoughts of marriage. Derek got the Newcastle F.C. fixture list out of his pocket and the date was arranged when Newcastle had an away match. They were married at St. Michael’s Church, Heaton on 20th February 1954.
Derek is ex RAF and served in Egypt and Shropshire. He left the forces after 5 years and became a long distance lorry driver until 1969 when the couple decided to move to Newton Aycliffe when Derek landed a job with UMM.
Derek and Mary have two daughters who live close by and an adopted son who lives in Nottingham. There are four Grandchildren and three Great Grandchildren.
Their advice for a long happy marriage is to care for each other and stay faithful. The family came together for a celebration last weekend.
