There is a real buzz in the air at Sugar Hill after Year 6 pupils wrote to author Barry Falls. All classes across school started the year doing art work based on his book, ‘It’s Your World Now’. Year 6 have been writing to the author and had an email reply…
“Wow, thank you so much for getting in touch about the amazing things you and the children at your school have been getting up to! This was a really delightful email for me to get. I’m so pleased to hear that you connected with some of the ideas in ‘It’s Your World Now!’ – it was a very personal story that I wrote for my daughter, and to hear that it means something to you and your students is really amazing. It has been a very strange time for Primary schools (and everyone really) so I’m glad to hear that my work has in some way helped the children of Sugar Hill transition back into classroom life. I’m currently working on the finishing touches to my third book, so this is exactly the kind of positive feedback I need to remind me why it’s worth all the late nights!
I would love to pay your school a visit at some stage, although I have to say that being based over here in Northern Ireland I don’t often visit the north of England. In lieu of a real-life appearance I will endeavour to write back to the kids who have taken the time to write me those lovely, inspiring letters!
Thanks so much again, you really have made my day!”
We then sent him a selection of photographs of our displays which Barry annotated and added to his instagram story. We have since added them to the posts on our school instagram page.
We are delighted Barry has taken time out of his busy schedule to reply to the children and we are hoping that Barry will visit us in school. We would love the opportunity to meet him. In the meantime Year 6 were thrilled and are organising a ZOOM meeting with him.
Literacy Lead Mrs McCormack commented, “Reading is such high profile at Sugar Hill and forging links with authors truly inspires our children to read and write. It’s all about raising aspirations and who knows one day a Sugar Hill pupil may well have their work published and be a famous author like Barry”.
