After a very successful showcase at the Sage in Gateshead during Gymfusion 2015, Athena Sports Academy who train at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, once again had a very busy weekend. On Sunday 18th October, the club took part at the Deerness Floor Championships in Durham as over 600 gymnasts from clubs all over the North East met for this annual competition, with Gymnasts ranging from Novice, Intermediates to Advanced, competing in Mainstream and Disability Categories.
This competition increases in size every year so the amount of Gymnasts in some of the categories are quite high so it is quite an achievement to win a medal. It is also a really good opportunity for Gymnasts to compete for the very first time, which many of our gymnasts did with some really good performances. The club was really pleased that they managed to win 13 Gold, 13 Silver and 12 Bronze medals throughout the day, of which 6 of these were won by the Clubs, Warrior Boys.
After the competition had finished there was a lot of very proud coaches and parents all happy with what the club and their gymnasts had achieved during a very busy day. The hard work for the club doesn’t finish there though as many of the gymnasts are now training for the higher, NDP Regional Competitions hoping that the end result is competing at National Level for the Club. The club are also getting ready for the Annual Christmas Showcase on Saturday 5th December which will be held at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre.
Athena Sports Academy are always keen to welcome new members to our Gymnast family, both girls and boys, so should you or if you know anyone who may be interested please contact Sam on 07800 847527 or 01388 605946 for more information about the classes that we offer at the club.
