Athena Sports Academy based at Shildon and Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centres sent 2 teams of gymnasts to perform at the Sage in Gateshead on Saturday in front of an audience of over 800 people. The event, Gymfusion, is part of British Gymnastics National Festivals Programme which takes place throughout England and Northern Ireland and includes exciting and creative performances from gymnasts of all ages, abilities and disciplines, with shows guaranteed to wow the audience.
This year’s event, “Legends”, was well attended by many clubs from the North, from Leeds to the borders of Scotland. Athena sent over 30 gymnasts from the club to this elegant venue. The first to grace the stage was Athena’s Disability Team, a team of 6 gymnasts, 3 girls and 3 boys, whose routine, Athena’s Angel, was a tribute to the clubs very own legend, Gerry Fuller, who sadly passed away at the beginning of the year.
Their routine was aptly done to ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams, and bringing tears to those who watched it superbly executed by the team dressed in lovely white costumes. It was a fitting tribute to someone who is still in the hearts of everyone at the club.
The golden performance of this year’s Gymfusion has to be the mainstreams routine, which told the story of the Greek Goddess, Athena. All gymnasts were dressed in gold costumes with hair and make up to match, which made this a classical performance to be remembered.
The routine was full of flowing moves, by this talented team and applauded well by the audience. Last year’s performance received great plaudits, but Samantha Robson and Brittainy Fuller, who choreographed this routine, put together an even more amazing show which will be talked about for years to come.
Athena have a very busy couple of months ahead with many gymnasts entering regional and national competitions including boys from our Warriors Squad. The annual Christmas Showcase is where you will be able to see the Gymfusion routines which are not to be missed.
