Dear Sir,
I thought your readers may be interested in Heighington Women’s Institute poppy project.
Over the last two years, our group has been knitting, crocheting and collecting bottle bottoms to make nearly 18,000 poppies. We kept it as quiet as possible from the community until we placed the finished project on St. Michael’s tower in the centre of the village.
Many ladies took part in making the flowers, sourcing the netting, contacting the church authority and attaching the poppies to the net. Some of the husbands helped with placing the netting on the tower, and it was unveiled last weekend.
The reaction from the village has been amazing, and from other WI groups. We did this to mark the 100th year of the poppy being used as a mark of remembrance, and the idea came from a woman in America so it also remembers her. The idea and the person who organised us was Chris Houghton, who can be reached on 07778 508209.
