The inspirational work of Newton Aycliffe brain tumour research campaigner and fund-raiser Anna Swabey was further rewarded this week when she was presented with a Durham County Council Chairman’s Medal which recognises ‘significant achievement and outstanding effort in all walks of life’. It has been County Durham’s top civic award since it was introduced in 2007.

The presentation to Anna (centre) by Council Chairman Jan Blakey was watched by Anna’s parents and her fiancé, Andy Bell. Picture shows (l-r) Anna’s father, Keith, Cllr Blakey, Andy, and Anna’s mother, Linda

Anna, who is herself battling a terminal brain tumour, was nominated for the Medal by her Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club colleagues and received it just a few weeks after being honoured by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland with a ‘UK Young Citizen of the Year’ award.
