It was a brilliant week for budding sports stars at Stephenson Way Academy & Nursery School last week. Our school Sports Week provided children from Reception to Y6 with opportunities to take part in a range of events and, alongside the traditional sports day races, children could experience sports they may not have tried before. On Tuesday our Year 6 children took part in a Kwik Cricket Tournament at Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club.

They went up against many fine teams from the local area, and took part in some very close matches. The Stephenson Way B Team even managed to top their league! One of our Year 6 girls commented, “I’d never really played cricket before, and didn’t know what to expect, but I loved it! Everyone had so much fun and the other teams were great too.” Throughout the week, all children took part in an inschool football tournament. This ever popular event was ably assisted by the Year 6 pupils on our sports committee. Everyone enjoyed the fun atmosphere and taking part regardless of their skill level.

“It was really great playing with children from other classes. We all supported each other and cheered everyone on,” said one enthusiastic Year 4! The exciting culmination of the week was a mini Olympic Games, which was entirely planned and run by the Year 6 children for all of the other year groups. They did a fantastic job, explaining the events, demonstrating and making sure that everyone had fun. This event provided lots of opportunities for children in all year groups to try sports they may never have played before, including: boccia, curling, tennis and golf. Smiles beamed from the children as they competed to secure gold for their respective countries
