Dear Sir ,
Once again the state of the West Park lakes are being questioned, particularly the lack of care and attention given to the water and Mrs Bowell is right – both lakes are a complete eyesore!
Last year the Town Council Environment officer after many complaints had some young volunteers removing algae from the lakes to bes left on the side of the lake to rot! This made the lakes look even worse and very unattractive,
You can visit St. Oswald’s Park at any time of the day and see council workers keeping it tidy, so why can’t they spend more time cleaning the lakes?
Then the West Ward might have a beautiful place to shout about and our lakes would be the jewel in the crown for Newton Aycliffe.
The Officer stated the algae does not cause a hazard to the health of humans and if managed right should not cause any problems to wildlife, and that the water is safe!.
So why did the Council stop boating on the lake when the residents asked for them? It was also said at a Council meeting that it was not safe for children to be on the lake due to chemicals in the water and as a result West Ward lost the boats and boathouse.
People once sailed model boats on the lakes but got fed up as the algae was damaging their boats. I do hope some day our lakes will be something that we can look at with pride and not have to complain.
