George and Joan Wales of Walcher Road received a visit from the Mayor on Friday, 28th September, who called to congratulate them on their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

George was among those who called at Joan’s parents house to see her sister. Then one night at a dance at Spennymoor Rink Joan found herself alone at the end of the Dance. She recognised George across the ballroom and asked him to see her home safely. It wasn’t long after they were married at St. James’ Church, Coundon.

Both George and Joan are from the Spennymoor area, George was a farmworker and Joan worked at Smart & Browns. George took a job with Sabey Kriby at Aycliffe which entitled him to a rented house so the couple moved into their first home in Carileph Close.

George is a keen football fan and at one time managed the Acorn Juniors. Now he plays Bowls, travelling to Fishburn to play outdoors and Aycliffe Oak Leaf for indoor bowls. Joan was once an expert Cakemaker exhibiting around the country with her friend Barbara Hodgson.

They have two sons, Kelvin and Scott, five grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. All the family live close and enjoyed a celebration buffet meal together in the Oak Leaf Function Room.
