A group of Accident and Emergency specialists will complete a charity cycle ride in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).
The 14 strong-team from James Cook University Hospital will take on the 160 mile coast to coast ride from Whitehaven to Whitby on April 28.
The group of doctors, nurses, consultants and healthcare assistants, aptly named the “A&E Wheelers” hope to complete the physical challenge in three days.
Nurse, Louise Smith, 28, from Norton, said: “We are all really looking forward to it and we want to raise as much money as we can for the air ambulance. We work with the team frequently, so we know the great work they do and some of our doctors make up part of the GNAAS crew.”
Although no official target has been set, the group are positive that people will get behind their fundraising for the charity that operate three air ambulances across the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.
Miss Smith, a mother-of-one, said: “We are a close-knit unit and will pull together to make sure everyone is able to finish. We haven’t been able to do much training as a group as we all work different shifts at the hospital but we have trained individually and are all excited and nervous for the challenge ahead.”
GNAAS’ deputy director of operations, Jane Peacock, said: “We often land on the helipad at James Cook and work in conjunction with this brilliant team. We want to say a big thank you to them for their fundraising, as well as wishing them good luck in the ride.”
