Dear Sir,
As reported last week, on 7th December Durham County Council Planning Committee rejected the application to build an incinerator at Merchant Park. This decision was very welcome, and reflected the many strong objections submitted by residents, businesses and councillors based in Aycliffe Village, Newton Aycliffe, School Aycliffe and Heighington.
At the hearing itself, several residents addressed the committee in person. One resident who couldn’t be there sent in a letter, which was read out. There was no repetition, every speaker talked about their own fears and misgivings about the application.
As well as the three councillors referred to in an article last week, the other Aycliffe Councillors who spoke eloquently and passionately deserve to be mentioned: Eddy Adams, Jim Atkinson and Carl Robinson. I must also mention Aycliffe Councillor Arun Chandran and Darlington Councillor Gerald Lee, who both gave excellent support throughout the campaign.
It was a truly commendable cross-party effort by many local councillors, and a successful campaign by residents.
Yours faithfully
Eileen Brewis
