A popular re-enactment of life in Roman times is set to wow crowds once again this Bank Holiday.
Roman forces will meet native tribesmen in live combat at Binchester Roman Fort on August Bank Holiday Monday.
Various re-enactment groups will use archery, slingstaffs and a full scale replica of a Roman artillery catapult, known as a ballista, to entertain crowds and give an insight into what life was like under the control of Imperial Rome.
Artisans and craftspeople will showcase their wares in a tented street market and guided tours of the new excavations will be available.
Dr David Mason, principal archaeologist with Durham County Council, said: “Last month’s event proved very popular and we had some wonderful feedback from families which came along.
“In addition to seeing aspects of Roman life and combat, wonderfully recreated by reenactors, this will be the last opportunity this year for people to view the spectacularly well-preserved remains. They form part of the regimental bath-building which has walls still standing to a height of more than two metres above Roman floor level.”
The fun begins at 11am and is repeated at 2pm on Monday, August 31. Adult entry is £5 with concessions £4 and children £3 (Under 4s are free).
The event is run by Durham County Council’s Archaeology Section, supported by staff of Archaeological Services at Durham University and volunteers from the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland.
Members of Nordmanni Living History Group thrill the crowds with their fighting skills at last month’s event.
