A classic play will bring passion, tragedy and class confusion to the Gala Theatre this month. August Strindberg’s famous tragedy Miss Julie is an electrifying play of seduction and status set on a midsummer night in an old manor house. The 1888 play has been fittingly adapted for Gala audiences by award-winning director Jake Murray, transporting the story from its original Swedish setting, to the North East of England. The play also has a personal interest for Jake as his father Braham Murray directed a 1995 production of Miss Julie. Audiences can witness a special night within the manor as, for one night only, servants and masters are equal and drink and dance together into the small hours. With merriments in full swing and the Lord away, his daughter Miss Julie strays into the servant’s quarters in search of the head butler John. Driven by attraction and desire, their heated encounter unfolds before the audience with fatal consequences. This North East adaption is produced by Durham-based Elysium Theatre Company. Miss Julie shows at the Gala Theatre on Saturday 23rd March at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at www.galadurham.co.uk/galapost/miss-julie
