Sedgefield Community College, one of seven schools within the Laidlaw Schools Trust, has been recognised for the third time in recent weeks for its outstanding level of teaching, learning and overall achievement.
Having recently won two TES Awards for ‘Best Secondary School’ and ‘Best Science, Maths and Technology Team’ and a Silver Award for ‘Making a Difference – Secondary School of the Year’, now Sedgefield Community College English Department has won the Lord Glenamara Memorial Award, Excellence in English, after being assessed by a DfE panel and Oxford & Trinity College.
Commenting on this latest accolade, Geoff Robinson, Headteacher said: “After a very challenging year I am so pleased our English team have finished the year on an incredible high point and I am proud of their prestigious achievement. It is yet another recognition of the entire school’s shared determination to make a difference to each and every one of our students”.
Steph Moore, Assistant Headteacher said: “The English Department at Sedgefield has been regarded as outstanding for many years. Our focus over more recent years has been moving towards being an exceptional department. Winning this award is the recognition of how we have strived to do this especially over what has been one of the most challenging times in education this century has seen.
“Our thought process is very simple: we always have our students at the core of everything we do. We want the best for them and will always find a way to ensure they achieve. What I am most proud of is the relationships we build with our students, and I believe that you will not find the same level of collaboration and care anywhere else.”
Going forward, we are looking forward to an academic year which will hopefully be uninterrupted by the troubles we have seen over the last eighteen months. As a department, will we continue to evolve as always, to meet the needs of the students we teach and to ensure that they achieve their best despite what has been thrown at them”.

The Lord Glenamara Prize was first Introduced by the Department for Education in 2012. It is an annual award that shines a spotlight on talent from across the North East. The programme forms part of the Government’s commitment to level up and improve educational and employment outcomes whilst raising young peoples’ aspirations in the North East and it is backed by up to £24 million of funding.
