Dear Sir,
I would like to answer the query about the flags outside St Clare’s Church.  I thought it was a shame that an event as historic as the Olympic Flame coming through our town should attract no flags and bunting, so myself and a couple of friends decided to put some up.
We thought our neighbours would enjoy a bit of fun and razzmatazz and I am sure from remarks we have heard, most of them did. The Union Jacks were flown because this is our flag and we are patriotic. The flags of other countries were flown to show we welcome the nations of the world to Great Britain in friendly competition.
The  flag of Wales was flown to remind us that, although they are taking part in the GB team, we must remember that each of our home countries has an identity of its own. It is good that we can come together and work in unison.  I flew two flags not knowing which country they belonged to, which was our way of saying all countries of the world will be made welcome for the Olympic in the hope in the end we will all be friends.
To be honest, another reason was that those were the flags we had so they would have to do. Surely the point is that when someone tries to liven the place up to brighten up our lives for an hour or so they might not do it to your particular standard or taste. Surely it should be remembered that someone did something for the right reason, and with the best of intention. If they were given a bit of credit, thanks and support they might do more. Others might get to thinking about doing things for their community too.  Wouldn’t that be lovely? Give it a go and try saying something supportive, you’ll be surprised how good it makes you feel.
Please come to St. Clare’s Saturday Coffee Morning, 10am to noon, and have a chat Mr Symington, the teas are on me and we always have a lively chat and a laugh.  Newton News reported over 15,000 people turned out to see the flame so  over half the town came out and enjoyed a happy, exciting event together.  When will we see that again?    Enough willing people and goodwill and we could find an excuse to be happy.
