A new project initiated by Newton News took fruition this week when local tradesmen donated their time and expertise to illuminate the memorial stones situated outside St. Clare’s Church in time for Remembrance Sunday.

The original concept for the war memorial was pulled together by the late Syd Howarth, through the Rotary Club of Newton Aycliffe, and was erected for the Annual Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service, which took place on 9th November 2008, this also marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of Newton Aycliffe.

Renowned northern artist, Peter Furlonger from Gateshead, whose vision, design and skill is on permanent display for all to view, was instrumental in pulling together the stones and the carvings.

Newton News editor, Paul Howarth, recently spoke with the clergy at St Clare’s, as well as several trades, to put in place an addition to the epitaph to give the memorial a brighter future.

First to offer their services was electrician, Andy Shields from EJS Electrical. Andrew visited the site, worked out how and what was required for the project including a landscaper to lift and relay the paving slabs, this service, was again, provided free of charge by TB Tarn Landscapers.

The next stage was donated by Gary Monk from UPEX Electrical Distributors, who provided all the supplies required for Andrew to complete the project.

The ground work took place on Thursday 29th October and will be lit on Sunday 1st November with a red glow to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.

Without the above companies help and advice this project would not have come together and we take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank them for their donation, time and service.

Rev Jeff Anderson commented “At this difficult time, when we cannot come together as a community to remember those who have given so much so that we may have the life we have today. To have these people willing to give their time, talents and energy to make this imaginative addition to a wonderful memorial, is a brilliant example of a community at work. Thank you to all who have helped.”
