With silver medals hanging proudly round their necks, the Year 5 and 6 girls’ football team returned happily to Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery School this week to share news of their second place position in a football tournament.

A fast paced team with a strong defence, the girls proved a force to be reckoned with throughout the three week competition, which was held locally at Greenfield Community College. Having lost their first game (to the competition winners) they not only won every match that followed but amazingly kept a clean sheet as team after team tried but failed to concede a goal against them.

Having coached the girls to silver medal position, Miss Whitfield told us, “The sheer determination and grit shown by this group of girls (who had previously not played a game together) was outstanding. From the outset they were able to work confidently as a team and thoroughly deserved to be medal winners.”

Thanks to Sedgefield Sport Partnership, who organised the fantastic event, as well as Greenfield Community College for providing their facilities and a host of young sports leaders to facilitate the matches.
