Elsie Eastham’s 100th birthday celebration took place at Aycliffe Care Home this week with many of her family present. Elsie was born in Metal Bridge and lived most of her life in Tow Law and then Preston for 19 years before moving in with her daughter and then retiring to Aycliffe Care Home where she has lived for the last 14 years.
Elsie is the last one of nine children. She has six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Elsie had a busy working life as an auxiliary nurse, lolly pop lady and post lady between having her two children. She outlived four husbands.
Elsie went on her first aeroplane flight at the age of 70 with her nephew John. She took the long journey to New Zealand for a month to celebrate her brother Albert’s 80th birthday. The visit included a helicopter ride over Fox Glacier.
On her birthday she was visited by 5 generations, and the Care Home provided a party, special  birthday cake and an entertainer.
Our Mayor, Mary Dalton, attended to deliver a bouquet of flowers along with congratulations on behalf of the townspeople
