Woodham Academy Humanities Department (History, Geography and RE) took Year 7 students to Beamish Museum on a school Specialist Day, a day where students are able to have educational experiences they would not have in the classroom.
Whilst at Beamish the students were able to explore the various sites, including the mine and mining village.  In the mining village they experienced education as it would have been 100 years ago, which turned out to be very different from what they are used to today.  At the town, the big draw was, of course, the sweet shop, where lots of students mysteriously developed blue tongues.
Students were also fascinated to find out about life on the farm during World War Two and the opportunities that were available to the ‘land girls’. They also had the opportunity to visit the funfair which, on such a beautiful day, was very popular.
Although nothing like the “white knuckle” rides we might find today, a ride on a carousel, a swing boat or a turn at the coconut shy proved a most enjoyable experience.  Students returned home tired but happy, having had a very enjoyable experience.
