Woodham Academy’s new rugby team recorded impressive victories in both their matches at the Bishop Auckland Festival.

The school has recently added rugby union to the extensive range of sports it offers. The newly developed Rugby Academy team came away from the Festival with a 100-percent record.

The Woodham XV beat St John’s 14 – 7 in the first match with two tries scored by James Imiela, both converted by Liam Wynn. The team then won their second match against Bishop Barrington 34 – 0, with tries from James Imiela (2), Andrew Blair (2), Dylan Lewis, and Liam Wynn, who also scored two conversions.

Rugby coach Paul Richardson said: “The team were simply fantastic with ball in hand and defended with strong, physical tackling. The players worked very well together and supported each other. There is talent throughout the team, which is working hard and developing quickly, and looking forward to their next test.”

Liam Wynn was named Woodham’s player of the tournament, with honourable mentions going to Spencer Soakell, Aaron Busby, and Euan Baker.
