An exciting Roman re-enactment will transport visitors back in time this bank holiday.
Binchester Roman Festival is inviting visitors to experience an encampment of Roman soldiers, complete with traders and artisans. The day includes a thrilling demonstration of Roman military skills with archery, slingshots and catapult artillery.
Barbaratus the Roman cavalryman will be demonstrating fighting skills on horseback, as well as exciting battles between groups of Roman soldiers and barbarians being brought to life.
David Mason, Durham County Council’s principal archaeologist, said: “It is a thrilling day for all ages and an experience steeped in history you won’t forget. It is not every day you get to see a Roman battle in person.”
When the battle is over, visitors can inspect fort remains including the richly decorated building which has replaced the former timber structure and protects the bath-building inside the fort.
Tours of this year’s fascinating excavation will also be available.
Re-enactment events start on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August at 11am, repeated at 2pm (timings approximate).
Ticket prices are: Adults £7.00, Concessions £6.00, Children £5.00 (aged four and under free). This will be cash payment only.
